LOCAL SIDE JAPAN is an independent guide to the Tokyo that most visitors never see.
We write about ordinary neighborhoods, local history, small streets, hidden temples, unusual stories, and places that reveal how Tokyo is really lived.
No crowded checklist. No manufactured experience.
Just the local side of Japan.
New here? Start with the complete guide to Tokyo’s east side: every story by ward, and three days you can copy.

Who writes this
I’m Kizuku. I run the Sunamachi Ginza Sumo Stable, a small sumo experience on the east side of Tokyo, in Koto City. Most of the places on this site are within a short train ride or bicycle ride of where I work every day: the shopping streets, canals, temples and back roads east of the Sumida River that guidebooks skip.
I write about them because this is the Tokyo I actually live in. It is not more beautiful than Shibuya or Asakusa. It is simply real, cheap, and mostly empty of tourists, and I think that makes it worth an afternoon.
How this site is made
Every article is checked against official sources (ward offices, shrine and temple notices, railway and museum pages) and the date of that check is written at the bottom of the post. Where a photo is not mine, it is credited. I am replacing borrowed photos with my own as I go back to each place with a camera.
Some articles contain affiliate links to booking sites such as GetYourGuide, Viator and Klook. If you book through them, LOCAL SIDE JAPAN earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. Recommendations are never sold, and I only link to things I would tell a friend to book.
