The Japan Rail Pass Costs ¥50,000. Your Trip Probably Costs ¥28,800.

JAPAN / RAIL PASSES / THE ARITHMETIC

The 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000. A return trip from Tokyo to Osaka on the trains the pass actually lets you use costs ¥28,800. If your trip is Tokyo plus Kyoto or Osaka — which is most first trips — the pass loses you about ¥21,000. It has been this way since the 2023 price rise, and a great many guides have not redone the sums. Meanwhile, on 16 October 2026 JR announced the next increase, which changes the picture again from 2027.

Fast facts

  • 7-day Japan Rail Pass: ¥50,000 online, ¥53,000 through an overseas agency. Buying direct is cheaper now — the opposite of the old advice
  • Tokyo⇄Shin-Osaka return on Hikari: ¥28,800. The pass needs you to travel nearly twice that far to break even
  • Break-even is roughly Tokyo–Osaka–Hiroshima and back, and even that is marginal
  • The pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho without a supplementary ticket — the fastest trains cost extra
  • Announced 16 Oct 2026: Nozomi reserved Tokyo–Shin-Osaka rises ¥14,720 → ¥15,420 from 1 July 2027. Hikari and non-reserved are unchanged
  • For a Tokyo-based trip the right product is the ¥16,000 Tokyo Wide Pass, not the ¥50,000 one
  • ⚠️ The whole-Japan pass voucher is posted to your home address, not emailed. That is its most common complaint

What the pass costs

DurationOrdinary, adultGreen, adultOrdinary, child
7-day¥50,000¥70,000¥25,000
14-day¥80,000¥110,000¥40,000
21-day¥100,000¥140,000¥50,000
Online prices from the JR Group’s official Japan Rail Pass site, read 17 October 2026. Children are 6–11 at time of use.

Now the part most guides have backwards. Buying through an overseas travel agency costs more, not less:

DurationOnline, directOverseas agencyDifference
7-day¥50,000¥53,000+¥3,000
14-day¥80,000¥84,000+¥4,000
21-day¥100,000¥105,000+¥5,000
Both sets of prices from the official site. The old advice to buy an exchange order abroad before arriving is now the expensive option.

The official site also notes that only online purchases let you reserve seats before you collect the pass. So the cheaper route is also the more useful one.

What the trains cost

To know whether a pass is worth it you need the price of the journeys you would otherwise buy. These are current adult one-way fares including the limited-express charge, from the JR Central and JR West announcement of 16 October 2026:

JourneyFare (reserved)Notes
Tokyo – Shin-Osaka, Hikari¥14,400The fastest train a pass holder uses without paying extra
Tokyo – Shin-Osaka, Nozomi¥14,720Supplement required with a pass
Tokyo – Shin-Osaka, Nozomi non-reserved¥13,870
Tokyo – Nagoya¥11,300
Shin-Osaka – Hiroshima¥10,950
Shin-Osaka – Hakata (Fukuoka)¥16,020
Published by JR Central and JR West, 16 October 2026. Green car Tokyo–Shin-Osaka is ¥19,590.

The break-even calculation

Against the ¥50,000 seven-day pass, using the Hikari fares a pass holder would actually travel on:

Your itineraryTickets would costPass ¥50,000Verdict
Tokyo ⇄ Osaka / Kyoto¥28,800¥50,000✗ Lose about ¥21,200
Tokyo → Osaka → Hiroshima → Tokyoabout ¥50,700¥50,000≈ Break even
Tokyo → Osaka → Fukuoka → Tokyoabout ¥60,800¥50,000✓ Win about ¥10,800
Sums of individual legs. ⚠️ Japanese rail fares taper with distance, so a single through-ticket is cheaper than adding the legs — meaning the real break-even is harder to reach than this table shows, not easier.

Read that caveat properly, because it matters. I have added leg to leg, which flatters the pass. A through-fare from Tokyo to Hiroshima is less than Tokyo–Osaka plus Osaka–Hiroshima. So the middle row is not really break-even; it is probably still a small loss.

The practical rule: the 7-day pass starts to make sense when you are travelling beyond Hiroshima, or moving city almost every day. For the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Tokyo first trip, buy two tickets and spend the ¥21,000 you saved on something you will remember.

The Nozomi problem

The pass does not simply cover the Tokaido Shinkansen. Nozomi and Mizuho — the fast services — require a supplementary ticket issued only to pass holders, at extra cost. Without it you take the Hikari or Kodama, which stop more often.

On Tokyo–Osaka the time difference is modest, perhaps twenty minutes. Over a week of long legs it adds up, and it is the hidden cost nobody prices in: a pass does not just cost ¥50,000, it also costs you the fastest trains unless you pay again.

What changes in 2027

On 16 October 2026, JR Central and JR West announced the first increase in Nozomi and Mizuho reserved-seat charges since privatisation. What it does:

NowFrom 2027Change
Tokyo – Shin-Osaka, Nozomi reserved¥14,720¥15,420+¥700
Tokyo – Nagoya, Nozomi reserved¥11,300¥11,880+¥580
Shin-Osaka – Hiroshima¥10,950¥11,210+¥260
Shin-Osaka – Hakata¥16,020¥16,300+¥280
Tokyo – Shin-Osaka, Green car¥19,590¥23,290+¥3,700
Hikari and Kodama reserved¥14,400unchanged—
Nozomi non-reserved¥13,870unchanged—
Reserved-seat increases apply to tickets purchased from 1 July 2027; the Green car increase applies to travel from 15 December 2027.

Two things follow. First, the increase lands on exactly the trains a pass holder has to pay a supplement for anyway — so it makes the Hikari, which the pass covers, relatively better value. Second, the Green car rise of ¥3,700 on one leg is large, and the Green pass is ¥20,000 more than the ordinary one. If you were weighing Green, re-do that sum for travel after December 2027.

The regional passes are usually the answer

Almost nobody needs unlimited travel across all of Japan. The regional passes are a fraction of the price and, judging by their complaint rates, better-run products.

The JR EAST PASS at 0.9% is the best-run rail product measured here, and for a trip that stays east of Nagoya it costs ¥15,000 less than the national pass. The Tokyo Wide Pass at 8.2% is the worst-run, which is a shame because it is the correct product for most Tokyo-based trips — see the warnings below before you buy it.

What goes wrong when you buy one

The whole-Japan pass: it arrives in the post

This is the dominant complaint and it surprises people. The exchange order is a physical document posted to your home address, not an email. Reviewers report a listing saying three or four days and a courier taking seven to ten working days; one group’s voucher went to their home while they were already in Japan; another’s was never dispatched because they had entered their address in Chinese characters, and nobody told them until they chased it. If you are inside two weeks of departure, buy direct from the official site instead.

The JR EAST PASS: the 90-day clock

The exchange order must be redeemed within 90 days of purchase — you are not choosing a start date when you buy. One traveller arrived one day outside the window and had to buy a new pass on the spot. Also check that each traveller’s passport name is on their own voucher: one buyer entered two passports and the system issued both to one name, which cost them ¥35,000 at the counter in Sendai.

The Tokyo Wide Pass: collection is the problem

At 8.2% this has the worst record of the passes, and the complaints are logistical rather than about the pass itself:

  • It can only be exchanged the day before or the day of use, which constrains your itinerary
  • Collection is only at the airport or office you selected, not “any JR station”. One traveller landed at Narita at 22:00 to find the Terminal 1 counter shut and had to return the next day — two hours each way
  • QR codes that do not scan at the machine, with staff unable to look up the booking number
  • Refunds refused on the spot, with each side pointing at the other

If you are buying the Tokyo Wide Pass, buy it from JR East directly or at a staffed JR office after you arrive.

What to buy

Tokyo-based trip with a day or two out of the city

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass, ¥16,000 for 3 days, covering Nikko, Karuizawa, the Fuji area and GALA Yuzawa. One return trip to Nikko or Karuizawa gets you most of the way to its value. Buy it from JR East or at a staffed office in Japan rather than as an advance voucher, for the collection reasons above.

When the national pass genuinely wins

If you are going beyond Hiroshima — Fukuoka, Kyushu, or Tokyo to Kansai to Kyushu and back — or moving city almost every day for a week, the ¥50,000 pass pays for itself. Buy it online from the official JR site at ¥50,000 rather than at ¥53,000 abroad; if you use a platform instead, allow for a posted voucher and order at least three weeks out.

Before you buy, in order

  • Write down your actual journeys and add up the fares above. Most people stop wanting the national pass at this step
  • Compare against the regional pass for the area you are really in
  • If you buy the national pass, buy it online direct — ¥3,000 cheaper than an agency and you can reserve seats early
  • Remember Nozomi costs extra even with a pass
  • Allow three weeks if a platform is posting you a physical voucher
  • Check the redemption window — 90 days from purchase on some passes, not a date you choose
  • Check every traveller’s name on every voucher before you fly

Quick answers

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it in 2026?

Usually not for a first trip. The 7-day pass is ¥50,000, while a Tokyo to Osaka return on the Hikari trains a pass holder uses costs ¥28,800 — so a Tokyo plus Kyoto or Osaka itinerary loses about ¥21,000. The pass breaks even at roughly Tokyo–Osaka–Hiroshima and back, and only clearly wins if you travel to Fukuoka or Kyushu or change city almost daily.

How much is the Japan Rail Pass?

Bought online from the official site: ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 and ¥100,000 for 21, in ordinary class for an adult. Green car is ¥70,000, ¥110,000 and ¥140,000. Buying through an overseas travel agency costs ¥3,000–¥5,000 more, and only online purchases allow seat reservations before you collect the pass.

Can you use the Nozomi with a Japan Rail Pass?

Only with a supplementary ticket issued to pass holders, at extra cost. The same applies to the Mizuho on the Kyushu Shinkansen. Without it you travel on the Hikari or Kodama, which make more stops. This is a real cost of the pass that rarely appears in comparisons.

Are Shinkansen fares going up?

Yes. On 16 October 2026, JR Central and JR West announced that Nozomi and Mizuho reserved-seat charges rise for tickets purchased from 1 July 2027 — Tokyo to Shin-Osaka goes from ¥14,720 to ¥15,420. The Green car on that route rises from ¥19,590 to ¥23,290 for travel from 15 December 2027. Hikari and Kodama reserved seats and Nozomi non-reserved are unchanged.

Which rail pass is best for a Tokyo trip?

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass, ¥16,000 for 3 days, which covers Nikko, Karuizawa, GALA Yuzawa and the Mt Fuji area. For a trip extending into Tohoku, the JR EAST PASS at ¥35,000 for 5 days is ¥15,000 cheaper than the national pass and has the best complaint record of any rail product measured here, at 0.9% one- and two-star.

What goes wrong when buying a Japan Rail Pass online?

With the whole-Japan pass, the exchange order is a physical document posted to your home address rather than emailed, and reviewers report it taking seven to ten working days against an advertised three or four, sometimes arriving after they had left. The JR EAST PASS must be redeemed within 90 days of purchase, not on a date you pick. The Tokyo Wide Pass can only be collected at the specific airport or office you chose, and only the day before or the day of use.

Should you buy a rail pass before arriving in Japan?

Buy online from the official site, which is now cheaper than an overseas agency and lets you reserve seats in advance. The old advice to buy an exchange order abroad is out of date on price. If you are within about three weeks of departure and a platform would post you a paper voucher, buy direct instead.

Planning the rest of the trip

The same arithmetic applies to the short hops. The discounts on the airport trains have conditions that decide which is worth buying, and if you are connecting between cities with bags, large coin lockers are rarer than anyone admits. For the day trips a regional pass pays for, the odds on actually seeing Mount Fuji are published and seasonal.

Pass prices are from the JR Group’s official Japan Rail Pass site and JR East’s own pages, read 17 October 2026. Shinkansen fares and the 2027 increases are from the JR Central and JR West announcement of 16 October 2026. Break-even figures add individual legs, which overstates a through journey because Japanese fares taper with distance — the real break-even is harder to reach than shown. Complaint rates are one- and two-star counts over each product’s real review total on Klook, same date. Reviews are summarised, not quoted.
